4B is the applied equipment half of the 4th Class certificate. It is built around real plant hardware, operating procedures, and the maintenance work that keeps the site running.

What this paper covers

The paper begins with lubrication and bearings, then moves to pumps and compressors, boiler safety devices, and boiler plant operations and maintenance. After that come water treatment, prime movers and engines, auxiliary building systems, refrigeration, HVAC, heating and cooling systems, and the types of plants where these systems appear.

The through-line is practical operation. You are expected to know what the equipment does, how it is started, what can go wrong, and what the safe response looks like. It is less about theory and more about the plant as a working system.
