2A3 is the systems paper in Second Class Part A. It is about boiler hardware, pumps, inspection, and the water chemistry that keeps a plant from slowly eating itself.
What this paper covers
The boiler section covers steam generator design, heat transfer, circulation, ratings, boiler types, fittings, safety devices, drum internals, soot blowers, waterwalls, superheaters, desuperheaters, attemperators, economizers, air heaters, blowdown systems, flash tanks, steam separators, installation and support, insulation, operation, maintenance, inspection, and hydrostatic testing.
The pump section covers practical pumping theory for power plants, installation, maintenance, operation and control, impeller types, seal selection, shaft alignment, thrust balancers, tachometers, and boiler feed pump recirculation control.
The water treatment section covers impurities, feedwater treatment, boiler-water treatment, analytical methods, steam and water sampling, cooling-water treatment, industrial waste treatment, and potable water treatment and testing.

Exam format facts
2A3 is a 3-hour, 100-question multiple-choice paper with a 65% pass mark.
The current Second Class papers are all set up for multiple choice, so you should practise selecting the best option quickly from close distractors.
The same permitted references apply, including the jurisdictional Act and Regulations, CSA B51 and B52 extracts, ASME BPVC except Sections VI and VII, the ASME Academic Extract, B31.1, B31.3, formula and constant handbooks, steam and refrigeration tables, and a non-programmable calculator.
What trips people up
Candidates often over-focus on boiler types and under-study the procedures. 2A3 asks not only what the equipment is, but how you start it, shut it down, maintain it, inspect it, and prove it is safe.
Water treatment is another mark sink. The chemistry is not hard in isolation, but the terminology and control points blur together if you do not practise them. Know what each method removes or controls and what failure it prevents.
Pump questions usually look easy until the answer depends on a detail such as seal type, shaft alignment, or recirculation control. The safest study method is to learn parts, functions, and common failures together.

How to study it
Study boilers as a lifecycle, from design to inspection to maintenance. That gives you a mental map for questions that jump between components and procedures.
Keep pumps and water treatment in shorter drill sessions. Pumps reward repetition on parts and operation, while water treatment rewards vocabulary and cause-and-effect review.
Use timed mixed questions only after each subtopic feels stable, because this paper punishes vague memory more than most.
