SOPEEC 2A2 Exam Guide: Thermodynamics, Metallurgy, and Testing of Materials
2A2 is the theory-heavy Second Class Part A paper. It asks you to think clearly about heat, cycles, metals, corrosion, and material testing under time pressure.
What this paper covers
The thermodynamics section starts with heat, units, temperature scales, specific heat, latent heat, expansion, conduction, convection, radiation, gas laws, work, heat, and efficiency. It then moves into steam tables, dryness fraction, superheat, enthalpy, entropy, and practical cycles such as Rankine, Otto, Diesel, and Brayton.
The metallurgy section covers non-ferrous metals, crystal structure, alloying elements in iron, the iron-carbon diagram, alloy steels, stainless and high-chromium steels, cladding steels, heat treatment, welding symbols, and metallurgical applications for piping and tubing.
Testing of materials covers tensile, hardness, and impact tests, material properties such as creep and fatigue, weld defects, and nondestructive testing methods including visual, magnetic particle, liquid penetrant, ultrasonic, radiography, acoustic emission, proof, and leak tests. Corrosion and electrochemistry also belong here in the current syllabus.

Exam format facts
2A2 is 100 multiple-choice questions, 3 hours, and 65% to pass.
It follows the same multiple-choice Second Class structure as the other papers, so you should train for recall, speed, and elimination rather than long-form answers.
Use the same permitted references as the other Second Class papers, including the jurisdictional Act and Regulations, CSA B51 and B52 extracts, the ASME BPVC except Sections VI and VII, the ASME Academic Extract, B31.1, B31.3, formula and constant handbooks, steam and refrigeration tables, and a non-programmable calculator.
What trips people up
2A2 often fails candidates who know the definitions but cannot carry them through a calculation. Steam properties, gas laws, and cycle efficiency questions reward exact steps, not broad familiarity.
A second weak point is metallurgy vocabulary. If you only half-know the difference between hardening, tempering, normalizing, and annealing, the answer choices will look annoyingly similar.
Testing questions also hide in plain sight. You need to know what each test tells you, what defect it catches, and why a method is chosen. Memorizing the test names alone is not enough.

How to study it
Study thermodynamics first. It is the core of the paper and the part most likely to reward repeated problem work, especially on steam tables, entropy, and cycle analysis.
Then switch to metallurgy and testing. Use flash-style recall for the terms, diagrams, and test methods, because these sections are about recognition and precise wording.
Finish with timed mixed sets so you practise moving from heat calculations to materials questions without resetting your thinking every time.
