SOPEEC 2A1 Exam Guide: Applied Mechanics, ASME Code, and Industrial Administration
2A1 is Part A, Paper 1 of the Second Class set. It mixes calculations, code use, and administration, so the paper rewards steady practice more than last-minute cramming.
What this paper covers
The 2A1 syllabus has three sections. First is ASME Code, Sections I and VIII calculations, which covers cylindrical components, dished and flat heads, shells, welded covers, openings and compensation, stayed surfaces, relief valve sizing, and firetube boiler furnace and stay calculations.
Second is Industrial Administration, which asks for the jurisdictional Act and Regulations, plant design and layout, contract specifications, erection and modification work, and management topics such as staffing, training, motivation, discipline, planning, decision making, report writing, maintenance, inspection, budgeting, and safety programs.
Third is Applied Mechanics, which runs from motion, work, power, torque, friction, moments, stress and strain, beam loading, torsion, and liquid pressure and flow. The list is long because the paper expects you to move between equations, sketches, and reasoning without losing pace.

Exam format facts
The paper is 3 hours, 100 multiple-choice questions, and you need 65% to pass. That is the same structure used across the Second Class papers.
2A1 changed to multiple choice on January 1, 2025. Before that it was essay, sketch, and describe. If you are using older prep notes, make sure they match the current format.
Allowed references include the jurisdictional Act and Regulations, CSA B51 and B52 with extracts, ASME BPVC except Sections VI and VII, the ASME Academic Extract, B31.1 and B31.3, formula and constant handbooks, steam and refrigeration tables, and a non-programmable calculator.
What trips people up
The first trap is setup. In mechanics and code work, many wrong answers come from choosing the wrong equation, missing a unit conversion, or using the wrong design condition before any arithmetic even starts.
The second trap is code navigation. Having the code book in the room does not help if you have not practised finding the needed clause or table quickly. If you do not drill lookups, the paper eats your clock.
The third trap is treating industrial administration like generic management theory. This paper wants the actual jurisdictional Act and Regulations, plus specific operational judgement about planning, safety, maintenance, and reporting.

How to study it
Start with applied mechanics because it needs repetition. Do short sets of calculations by hand until the steps feel routine, then add timed mixed sets so you learn to move on when one problem bogs you down.
Work ASME navigation in parallel. Use the code and extract every time, even on problems you think you already know. The skill is not memorizing the answer, it is finding the right rule quickly under pressure.
Read the Act and Regulations directly, then make short notes on where each rule applies. Keep the administration section in smaller review sessions, and finish with full timed papers once the basics are stable.
