Alberta 4th Class: eligibility, exam prep, and steam time

These get mixed up. They are three different gates. SteamTicket only helps with one of them.

1. Accepted education — sit the exam

In Alberta, you generally cannot book the 4th Class papers until you have finished education that ABSA accepts. ABSA’s Fourth Class page says a candidate must:

• successfully complete a 4th class course in power engineering satisfactory to the Administrator, or
• successfully complete the first full term of a 2-year power engineering technology program satisfactory to the Administrator, or
• hold a mechanical engineering degree from a university satisfactory to the Administrator.

Part A of an accepted course qualifies you to write 4A. Part B qualifies you to write 4B. ABSA publishes the current list of accepted programs. That list is education providers — colleges and continuing-education distance programs — not exam-prep apps.

2. Exam prep — pass the papers

Once you are allowed to write, 4A and 4B are still two independent SOPEEC papers: 100 multiple-choice questions, 3 hours, 65% to pass, each paper on its own. It does not grant ABSA exam eligibility, send a completion letter to ABSA, or replace an accepted course.

3. Steam time / lab credit — get the certificate

Passing the papers is not the same as holding the certificate. ABSA also requires qualifying operating experience. Some college power labs on the Accepted PE Programs list qualify for experience credit (often six months toward 4th Class steam time). A distance continuing-education course that only “meets course requirements” is not the same thing as a lab that grants steam-time credit. Confirm the row that applies to your school with ABSA. SteamTicket is not a lab and does not create steam time.

BC 5th Class does not skip Alberta 4th Class

A 5th Class ticket and a 4th Class ticket are different certificates. Holding 5th Class, including a BC 5th Class, does not waive Alberta’s 4th Class education requirement to sit 4A/4B. Out-of-province transfers are for an equivalent certificate: you transfer the same scope, then write ABSA’s out-of-province transfer examination. You do not turn a 5th into a 4th by transferring.
