Studying for your British Columbia exam

✓ The standardized SOPEEC exam

Since March 1, 2023, Technical Safety BC has used the SOPEEC standardized exams — 100 multiple-choice questions, 3 hours, 65% to pass — for both 5th and 4th Class. These are the same papers written in Alberta and across the SOPEEC provinces, so study material keyed to the national SOPEEC syllabus applies directly in BC with no adaptation.

Training & eligibility

British Columbia recognizes power engineering training from providers such as BCIT, along with other approved colleges and private trainers. Confirm the training hours and operating experience required for your class with Technical Safety BC before you register to write.

Pay

Power engineering is a well-paid trade in BC. Current wage ranges by region are published by WorkBC and the federal Job Bank; pay rises with class, and 4th Class chief-engineer and shift roles sit well above entry-level operator wages.
